Marton Fucsovics owns a 3-0 lead in the head-to-head against Tallon Griekspoor, but it’s the No. 2 seed who’s the slight favorite in their next clash. Can the Dutchman turn this record around? 2024 ATP Winston-Salem champion Lorenzo Sonego is also in action against Wake Forest’s own Stefan Dostanic. Who do you think will come out the victor?
Head-to-head: McDonald 1-0
Mackenzie McDonald was struggling physically at the end of his clash with Brandon Holt, but still managed to get over the line. However, that puts the standard of his performance here under a huge question mark. The American will need to recover quickly as while Luciano Darderi still doesn’t have much hard-court experience, he’s gathered three ATP Tour titles this season and could actually produce something now that he’s found so much confidence.
Prediction: Darderi in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Lorenzo Sonego won the latest of his four ATP Tour titles at this venue last year, but this season has been extremely inconsistent from him. This could be an interesting match with Stefan Dostanic being a standout college performer for Wake Forest, the university this tournament is played at. The American will climb the rankings when he starts playing more pro events, but doesn’t have a particularly explosive game. He might give Sonego enough time to get into rhythm.
Prediction: Sonego in 3
Head-to-head: 1-1
Mattia Bellucci overcame a horrible Challenger record for the season (0-5) to claim his fourth trophy at that level in Sumter on Sunday. The Italian isn’t getting any rest here and the day after he was already competing against Francisco Comesana. A quick win there will give him a chance against Jaume Munar, but the Spaniard has also drastically improved his hard-court level of late. Bellucci’s game is so varied and can be tough to navigate even for himself, but right now he’s got the momentum and confidence.
Prediction: Bellucci in 3
Head-to-head: Fucsovics 3-0
There were moments this season when Tallon Griekspoor was playing Top 20 level tennis, but Toronto and Cincinnati had him losing in the opening rounds and that momentum seems gone now. The Dutchman could really use a win right now, and it’s tough to say if he can get that against Marton Fucsovics. That dominant head-to-head doesn’t feel that relevant right now, but the Hungarian remains a good competitor even post-prime and will make this a gritty affair.
Prediction: Griekspoor in 3
