'Because of his mindset': Mats Wilander explains why Jannik Sinner reminds him more of 'Big Three' than Carlos Alcaraz

Former world number one Mats Wilander explains the reason behind why Italy’s Jannik Sinner reminds him more of ‘Big Three’ than Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Both players already regarded as two of the best players in men’s tennis in the singles category.

While Sinner remains the world number one for more than 50 weeks now with some incredible consistency on all surfaces, he has found it hard to get the better of the young Spaniard who has now defeated him in last four matches. Their most recent meeting was in the final of the recently concluded Rome Open where Alcaraz came out on top in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1.

Despite those results, former world number one Wilander has recently spoken to TNT Spors and stated that the Italian tennis star reminds him more of the original ‘Big Three’ consisting of Switzerland’s Roger Federer, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. Wilander was of the opinion that Sinner’s ‘mindset’ makes him a worthy world number one who will going to be always there and there about.

"It tells you that Jannik Sinner going to stay No. 1 for the next three, four, five, six years because he is so consistent, because mentally he's there on every single point,” he said. "He reminds me more of the ‘Big Three’ than Carlos Alcaraz does because of his mindset. So the big question is whether Carlos Alcaraz is going to return to No. 1 in the world ever or within a year, or within two years? Because I think consistency-wise in every tournament, every day, every match, Jannik Sinner is going to be there. And when a record is like that, when it stood for two years before he lost in straight sets, that tells the whole story. I can't believe how good Jannik Sinner played after taking three months off from playing matches. And I can also believe why he went away in that second set and his level dropped a little bit.”
