Belinda Bencic’s return to the WTA Tour after pregnancy and childbirth has been nothing short of impressive. The Swiss star has already racked up a 28-14 win-loss record in 2025, proving that her tennis remains at an elite level. Yet, despite her strong performances, Bencic says she often finds herself facing more questions about motherhood than her actual matches.
In a recent interview, the Olympic champion expressed her frustration with the recurring focus on her role as a mother, calling for more emphasis on her career achievements.
“I try to be quite open, to give something and not just answer with yes and no. But when they ask you live on TV, on the BBC to boost things like: ‘Now you're in the semi-finals, but are you still changing diapers?’ Then I have to say: can we please talk about the quarter-final we won?” Bencic said.
“I love being a mother, but at some point, it's enough,” Bencic added. “I don't answer all the questions, they're too private. Yes, exactly. Of course, being a mother is part of my identity. But I also want to be known for being a good sportswoman and tennis player.”
Bencic’s remarks echo those of Naomi Osaka, who earlier this year also called out the media’s obsession with motherhood, emphasizing that her primary focus was her tennis career. Both players have made it clear that while motherhood is an important and cherished part of their lives, it should not overshadow their professional achievements.
With her strong results in 2025, Bencic has shown she is capable of competing at the highest-level post-motherhood. Her comments serve as a reminder that while the personal journeys of athletes can be inspiring, their sporting excellence should remain front and center.
