Ben Shelton 2025 Season Review: Onwards and Upwards for the American
USA Today Sports

Ben Shelton had a fantastic 2025. The American finished in the top 10 and the 23 year old cemented his place as a top contender for the biggest titles on the tour. It will be highly exciting times to see Shelton in 2026 if he is ready and able to reach even greater heights.

Decent First Half of 2025

Shelton began 2025 disappointingly losing his first match of the season in Auckland where he was seeded first but bounced back in style at the Australian Open. The American reached a well deserved semi final which is his best result at the Majors. Despite a straight sets loss to Jannik Sinner, Shelton created plenty of chances and the American would have been mighty pleased with the effort.

Post the Australian Open, Shelton waned off a little with no notable results till the French Open except for a final appearance at Munich. The American still needs a lot of work to be competitive on the clay courts and the French Open highlighted his immense potential on the clay courts as well.

Shelton reached the fourth round which is his best showing at the French Open where he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in four tight sets. All in all, it was a decent first half for the 23 year old.

Great Second Half of 2025

Shelton began the second half of the season with another best showing at Wimbledon. He reached the quarter finals for the first time at SW19. He did lose to Sinner once again in straight sets but these are uncharted territories for the young American and he can only improve with this experience.

What followed after Wimbledon was a string of great results only to end with heartbreak at the US Open. Shelton won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Toronto and backed that up with a quarter-final run in Cincinnati. Things were looking great for the 23 year old entering the US Open but an injury during his third round match against Adrian Mannarino meant he had to forfeit the match.

Since the US Open his results haven’t been great barring a quarter-final appearance at the Paris Masters but he did debut at the ATP Finals. Even though he lost all three group matches, the American would be motivated enough to use the learnings for a blockbuster 2026

2026 Outlook

Shelton needs to solve Sincaraz. All of his defeats at the Majors in 2025 came against Sincaraz (he retired due to an injury at the US Open). While he serve and forehand are majestic, works needs to be done on his backhand so that he can go toe to toe with the very best from the baseline.

He would also need to build on his strong showing on the clay courts in 2025 to aim for even greater results on his weakest surface.

The American plays his tennis with a lot of heart and flair which always excites the fans and one can only hope Shelton carries the same hunger for the biggest titles into 2026 with more success.
