After a lengthy hiatus from the main draw ATP Tour that saw him struggle to regain his form, Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic is back in the winner's circle following an opening round victory at the 2025 Mallorca Championships.

The 32-year old recorded what could be regarded as an upset victory over compatriot Rinky Hijikata in the first round, rallying from a set down to prevail with a 3-6 7-5 6-2 victory. This is Tomic's first ATP main-draw win in 1,597 days, his first tour-level win since the 2021 Australian Open.

Tomic battled through Mallorca qualifiers

The four-time ATP titlist had spent the last few years grinding through the ATP Challenger Tour, with several pondering on his desire to keep playing at a professional level. After several hiccups and volatile outbursts on court, Tomic finally made it to the qualifying rounds in Mallorca.

Defeating Dutchman Jesper De Jong and top-seeded American Aleksander Kovacevic in the qualifying rounds, Tomic was slated to face compatriot Hijikata in the first round of the main draw in Mallorca. To everyone's surprise, the former World No.17 displayed the grit and passion that has been missing from his game for the last few years. Tomic played his best tennis in recent memory to defeat Hijikata, scoring his first ATP tour-level win in over four years.

Awaiting the resurgent Aussie in the round of 16 is Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut, who fought back from a set down in his opening round match to score a three set victory over Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
