Bianca Andreescu's Libema Open run halted: Elena-Gabriela Ruse advances to semifinals
IPA

Bianca Andreescu was unable to overcome Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse, falling 2-6, 4-6 at the Libema Open s'Hertogenbosch after an hour and 20 minutes. The world No. 118 struggled with consistency on her serve and faced an opponent who was particularly precise in crucial moments.

The Canadian's performance level was low, and in the latter games, she didn't look entirely well physically, barely running in several rallies. She committed up to 5 double faults and won only 50% of her service points. She exits the tournament in the quarterfinals, while Ruse reaches her second WTA 250 semifinal in less than two months.

First Set: Ruse Dominates From the Start

It was a weak start for the former US Open champion, who failed to impose herself much on serve and quickly saw Ruse take an early lead with a break. Few, however, would have predicted that Andreescu's service level wouldn't improve in the following games. Ruse capitalized on Andreescu's erratic start and secured three consecutive breaks to lead 5-0.

It seemed a bagel might be on the cards for Ruse, who was serving for the set, but Andreescu managed her first break – and her first game – of the set. However, it wasn't enough for a comeback, as Ruse then held serve to close the set 6-2, winning 58% of her service points and a notable 64% of return points.

Second Set: Ruse Maintains Control

The second set didn't start much better for Andreescu, as Ruse went on a good run of points, taking a 2-0 lead with another early break. This time, the 24-year-old Canadian managed to elevate her service level, staying close to her opponent for much of the set.

However, the Romanian never offered a break opportunity throughout the set. With little opposition from either player on return, the set ultimately tilted in favor of the world No. 80, who showed a great level on grass courts, defeating an opponent who seemed to give up in the final part of the match.

Andreescu appeared very frustrated by her errors and contested fewer and fewer points. Ruse secured the victory 6-2, 6-4 and will face Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the semifinals – a great opportunity for both to reach the final, neither of whom were considered among the favorites for deep runs.
