Serena Williams may have stepped away from the game in 2022, but her presence is still felt throughout tennis.
And it’s not hard to see why. Williams is often mentioned in conversations about the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
So when talk started swirling about a possible comeback in 2026, it didn’t take long for the speculation to pick up steam.
Having achieved just about everything there is to achieve in tennis, Williams has been quick to push back against any talk of a return, especially after being listed among players taking anti-doping steps for the upcoming year.
During an interview with Sky Sports, King spoke positively about the possibility of Serena returning to tennis, and even backed the idea despite recognising that a comeback to the very top of the game was unlikely.
She said: “I think she wants to try to play again. But I also think she is very bright and intelligent, and she knows that she will not be number one again.
“If you like to play, why not? Well, she already has her life resolved. She doesn’t need money and enjoys it. Personally, I would love for Williams to come back.”
King then shared a memory from early in Serena’s career when both sisters were just children.
“I met her when she was six and Venus was seven at a tennis clinic we gave in Long Beach, California. They came with their dad, Richard. It was an amazing day. I’ll never forget it.
“We had the kids hit back and forth from the audience. Because they’re so exceptional. You could see right away they’re exceptional.”
The rumour mill surrounding Serena’s potential return hasn’t slowed down as Aryna Sabalenka recently claimed she believes there are players who could beat her if a comeback were to happen.
Serena hasn’t responded publicly to the early speculation around her possible return, which started spreading quickly after the initial reports.
She did address the growing conversation on X earlier this month, posting: “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
That message didn’t settle things down either, so she followed up with another post last week, adding: “Feeling strongly about claiming my mojo back.”
Since then, Williams has been careful with her words. Whether that’s because something bigger is in the works remains to be seen.
