Alexander Zverev began 2025 with high hopes and impressive form, reaching the Australian Open final after a series of strong performances. However as the season progressed, the German star's results took a downturn, leaeding to many early exits in several tournaments and raising question about his current mindset on court. The legendary Boris Becker has weighed in on Zverev's struggles, indentifying a crucial skill that appears to be missing from this game.

On the 'Becker Petkovic podcast', the former world's No. 1 discussed how legends such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal possess a relentless drive to seize opportunities and close out matches under pressure. This unique feeling is what separates the elite players from the rest.

Boris, while acknowledging Zverev's inmense talent and consistent persistance among the very best in the rankings, believes that this essential quality has faded for Sascha in recent months.

"Right now, since February, March, April, he doesn’t have that killer instinct,” Becker stated, pointing to Zverev’s inability to capitalize on crucial moments in matches. Despite a title win in Munich, Zverev’s performances in other tournaments have been underwhelming, with early exits at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, and failure to reach the semifinals in Madrid, Rome, and Hamburg, " said Becker.

That awesome run to the finals in Melbourne is somewhay supporting Zverev's numerous let downs of the season. If those points were removed, the world's No. 3 would be out of the ATP Race to Turin. But that won't be the case with the upcoming Roland Garros, where Zverev defends the points for last year's finals. If the German doesn't succeed to turn things around, he could face a significant drop in his position.

With a proven track record on clay and multiple deep runs at Roland Garros, Zverev will be eager to rediscover his killer instinct and reassert himself among the game’s elite. Whether he can do so remains one of the key storylines as the 2025 French Open gets underway.
