Novak Djokovic is still hunting for his 25th Grand Slam, which will make him the player with the most major titles in the Open Era. The Serbian has struggled to reach the milestone as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner continue to dominate the men’s circuit. Tennis legend Boris Becker believes that for him to win his 25th Slam, he will have to beat either Sinner or Alcaraz.
Djokovic last won a major title at the 2023 US Open after beating Daniil Medvedev in the final. The former World No.1 has managed to reach the final only once since then and that came at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, where he lost the title to Alcaraz in straight sets. This season, he reached the semi-finals of the three Grand Slam tournaments.
At the Australian Open, he had stunned Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, beating the Spaniard in four sets. He then went on to face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals but was forced to retire due to injury. Last month, at Roland Garros, he fell to Sinner in straight sets after reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
He battled again at Wimbledon, where he believed was his best chance of winning his 25th Grand Slam. But during his quarter-final clash against Flavio Cobolli, he slipped and fell awkwardly. That affected his performance against Sinner as he was nowhere near his best level, leaving the Italian star to dominate the match.
During an episode of Becker-Petkovic podcast, the German legend revealed that the biggest question for Djokovic is whether he can beat Sinner or Alcaraz. Becker added that Djokovic’s best chance of winning his 25th Grand Slam was at Wimbledon:
That’s the big question now, because to win a Grand Slam, he probably has to beat both [Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner]. That’s how it was with Wimbledon, and he said Wimbledon was the tournament where he had his best chance of winning a Grand Slam. As a reminder, he has already won the tournament seven times. He’s now reached the semifinals of Wimbledon 14 times, just imagine. That’s so absurd, it’s an insane number.
Djokovic’s loss to Sinner became his fifth consecutive defeat against the World No.1. He’s also down 4-6 in their head-to-head record and has not beaten the Italian star in over a year on tour. However, Djokovic has a better record against Alcaraz, as he leads the Spaniard 5-3 in their head-to-head record.
Novak Djokovic is currently 38 years old. Most players at his age decide to retire from the sport and focus on their family and other ventures. But, Djokovic is currently ranked World No.6 in the ATP and has won virtually everything the sport can offer.
In the same podcast, Boris Becker revealed that the sole reason Djokovic is still competing is because he wants to win his 25th Grand Slam. The German legend added that the Serbian is running out of time and has to be realistic in his pursuit:
He’s still playing tennis because he wants to win 25 Grand Slams, to become the sole record holder. But it must be said that on their good days, Sinner and Alcaraz are better than Djokovic is on his good days. That frustrates him, but he’s a realist. The question is, how realistic are the chances he’ll win another Grand Slam now, because time is running out for him.
Djokovic is likely to kick off his North American hard-court season at the Cincinnati Open. The World No.6 revealed during his post-match press conference after his semi-final loss at Wimbledon, that he will take a break to heal from the injury and return before the US Open in August.
