Boris Becker Shares Harsh Assessment on Jack Draper’s Disappointing Wimbledon Run

Jack Draper managed to win only one match at the Wimbledon Championships before crashing out in the second round. Expectations for the British star were high after he revealed that he was aiming for Andy Murray’s achievement at the tournament. And now, Tennis legend Boris Becker has revealed that he was the biggest disappointment of the tournament.

Ahead of the Wimbledon Championships, the major discussion was Draper sealing his place as the fourth seed of the tournament ahead of Taylor Fritz. The position was set to guarantee him that he doesn’t face Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz until the semi-finals of the grass-court Grand Slam.

The 23-year-old delivered and got to the fourth seed after reaching the semi-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships before losing to Jiri Lehecka in three sets. He was viewed by the British media as a threat to favorites Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

At the All England Club, he opened his account with a two-set lead over Sebastian Baez before the Argentine star retired due to injury. In the second round, he faced former finalist Marin Cilic and was outplayed by the Croatian star. Draper only managed to win the third set but that was of no avail as Cilic won the match in four sets.

Now, Draper has dropped to No.5 in the ATP rankings following his poor run at Wimbledon. During an episode of the Becker-Petkovic podcast, Becker stated that Draper didn’t give the kind of performance that was expected of him:

It wasn’t even close; he lost in four sets. I think he’s realising for the first time that, at Wimbledon, as a Brit, the tournament isn’t won with the forehand or the backhand, but with mentality. There’s an expectation, you have to perform. He spoke as if he were admiring Andy Murray, saying he was able to win the tournament once. Yes, fine, but he did it because of his attitude, his mentality, his preparation.

After Draper crashed out of the Wimbledon Championships, all eyes were on another Brit – Cameron Norrie, who reached the quarter-finals after beating Nicolas Jarry in five sets. The former semi-finalist faced Alcaraz in the last eight and lost to the two-time champion in straight sets.

Boris Becker gives Jack Draper a question he must ask himself after Wimbledon

Jack Draper has failed to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final this season. He managed to get to the fourth round of the Australian Open, but retired during his match against Carlos Alcaraz due to injury. At the French Open, he fell to Alexander Bublik in the fourth round despite being the favorite to win the clash.

During the aforementioned conversation, Boris Becker revealed that Draper was supposed to easily reach the second week of every Grand Slam tournament, before adding that the British star hasn’t been good enough on the court:

[Jack] Draper should be able to make it to the second week; he should be among the top three or four, because that’s what his ranking says. But he has to perform in the Grand Slams; he lost to [Alexander] Bublik in the last 16 in Paris, and now he’s lost to [Marin] Cilic in the second round [at Wimbledon]. That’s not good enough to be considered the best tennis player in the world. For the first time, he has to ask himself, ‘Why has this happened?’

Draper’s best run in a Grand Slam tournament so far has been at the 2024 US Open, where he reached the semi-finals. However, he lost to the World No.1 and eventual champion Jannik Sinner in straight sets. He hopes to get past that stage and reach his first Grand Slam final at this year’s edition of the US Open.
