Oliver Tarvet has produced a dream start to the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on a day where for British hopes, Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter will fly the flag. But it is Sonay Kartal and now Tarvet who have strutted their stuff early.

Tarvet has become the lowest-ranked man to reach the second round at Wimbledon in nine years and he could face Carlos Alcaraz next. It is an incredible story as he has never competed in an ATP or Grand Slam event.

He also can't keep any of his money due to NCAA collegiate system. The 21-year-old came through three qualifying matches to set up a first-round with Swiss ace Leandro Riedi who is ranked World No.506.

Tarvet had the home crowd behind him and given his experience in winning through qualifying, he took to the Court 4 atmosphere like a duck to water. He won through 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Under the rules of NCAA athletes, athletes must remain amateur.

Therefore he cannot make a profit beyond £7,300 a year. So winning at least £99k means that he won't receive it. A point that he was annoyed about in the run-up to the tournament.

"In my opinion, I've worked hard to get this money. I don't feel like it's undeserved the money that I've got.

"I think it would be good to see a change in the rules of the NCAA, but at the same time, I don't want to get involved. It's not really my place. But I've done well this week. I think I deserve this money."

But while it will be a talking point even more now he could face Alcaraz who takes on Fabio Fognini this afternoon, it will be overjoyment from the Brit over despair as he blazes a trail at SW19.
