Andy Murray will be immortalised with his own statue at the All England Lawn & Tennis Club with the news coming on the eve of Wimbledon in the first year where the two-time champion will not be playing.

Also it is very much pertinent with Murray set to be honoured in 2027 which is the 150th anniversary of the tournament with the statue then unveiled. He won the men's tournaments back in 2013 and 2016 and also Olympic gold at the venue in 2012.

It marks the second tournament in London to give him the treatment with Queen's renaming their Centre Court, the Andy Murray Arena after the great champion. He will be involved in designing of the statue.

After being the kingpin of British tennis for so long, Murray has had calls to receive recognition and he has got that now mirroring that of Rafael Nadal's handprint albeit more of a prominent piece at the All England Club.

“We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here (Wimbledon) and we’re working closely with him and his team,” All England club chair Debbie Jevans told the ainslie + ainslie Performance People podcast earlier this week confirming the announcement.

“The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first Championship, which was 1877.

“He’s got to rightly be very involved in that and him and his team will be.

“We had a great celebration for Andy when he played his last (Wimbledon) match, which was on Centre Court.

“All the old players came and they greeted him and Sue Barker interviewed him.

“We looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland Garros which was all very special. But we thought, what do we want for Andy?”
