Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been at the centre of several memorable clashes during the 2025 season.

Alcaraz and Sinner have been the dominant forces on the ATP Tour, including facing off in three straight Grand Slam finals.

The latest of those came in New York, where Alcaraz beat Sinner to win the US Open and reclaim his status as world number one.

Sinner has lost seven of his last eight matches against Alcaraz, who now says he knows exactly what to expect when they meet again.

At this point, it’s almost expected that the two will cross paths in finals, a pattern that hasn’t gone unnoticed. Even Roger Federer has commented on how tournaments seem to be leaning towards matchups between Alcaraz and Sinner.

But for now, fans won’t get another head-to-head just yet. Alcaraz is currently playing in Tokyo, while Sinner has opted for the China Open in Beijing.

Sinner was criticised for his performance against Alcaraz at Flushing Meadows and received some advice on how to adjust before their next encounter.

The four-time Grand Slam winner gave an honest take after the match, admitting he’d become a bit too easy to read.

Sinner has reportedly been working on new tactics since then, and Alcaraz expects a different approach from him when they do meet again – much like what happened after their Wimbledon final clash.

“I’m convinced he’s [Sinner] going to change things tactically in our next match,” Alcaraz told press in Tokyo. “I did it; I tried to be a better tennis player when I lost to him at Wimbledon, and I’m sure he’ll do the same. I have to be very focused and ready to respond to his new approaches.”

Path to the Japan Open title for Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz won’t need to think about facing Sinner again until the Shanghai Masters, where Novak Djokovic has also confirmed his participation.

Until then, Alcaraz’s attention will be on his debut at the Japan Open. Over the years, several greats have lifted this trophy, including Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras.

The Spaniard’s first match of the tournament will be against Sebastian Baez. The two have met twice before with Alcaraz winning both encounters.

Elsewhere in Alcaraz’s half of the draw are Casper Ruud, Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini. The latter is coming off a win in what was his first match back from injury.

There’s also a chance of meeting Taylor Fritz in the final. Not only did Fritz recently beat him at the Laver Cup, but he’s also a former champion here in Tokyo.

Alcaraz is scheduled to play his opening round against Baez on Thursday 25 September as he looks to add another title to an already successful season.
