Carlos Alcaraz continues to pile up achievements in his young tennis career. The Spaniard is only 21, an age when the “Big 3” members started to dominate, has already won four Grand Slams and countless other accolades. With the storyline heading into the 2025 Roland Garros, the Spaniard has many questions going into it.

As the Italian Open approached, the questions were there surrounding his fitness. Alcaraz had not competed in the Madrid Open after sustaining an injury during the Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune. By making the Italian Open semifinals, the Spaniard has received major news before Roland Garros.

No. 2 Seed Confirmed

Alcaraz was involved in the battle for the World No. 2 ranking with Alexander Zverev. After beating Jack Draper in the Italian Open quarterfinals, the Spaniard is confirmed to leapfrog the German as the World No. 2. Zverev was the defending champion at this year’s Italian Open and hoped to see the Spaniard lose before the semifinals to maintain his ranking, provided that he defends his title.

As Alcaraz is now World No. 2, he will now avoid Jannik Sinner in the main draw before the finals. The duo contested one of the matches of the season in the Roland Garros semifinals last year, with the Spaniard prevailing in five sets. It’s hard to imagine whether it is good news or bad news because Alcaraz has come out victorious against Sinner in all three of their encounters in 2024. Hence, the psychological edge would be there for the new World No. 2 in case both meet again.

More History Beckons

After reaching the Italian Open quarterfinals, Alcaraz became the second youngest player after Rafael Nadal to reach the last eight of all the major ATP competitions. With the World No. 2 ranking secured, the Spaniard will hope to write more history as he bids for a seventh career Masters 1000 title in Rome. If he conquers the Italian capital, he will join Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the players to win all the major tournaments on clay.

The young Spaniard won his first Monte Carlo title earlier this year. He is a two-time former champion at the Madrid Open, winning titles in 2022 and 2023. Last year, he won his first Roland Garros title, edging Zverev in a five set final.
