Carlos Alcaraz was reaching a stage of immortality on the court with a winning streak of 24 matches and another brilliant transition from clay to grass. It took an extremely precise No. 1 Jannik Sinner to draw unusual errors from the Spaniard and break a rhythm that had built so well in recent times.

In their recent meeting at the 2025 Wimbledon final, Sinner defeated Alcaraz 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 in just over three hours to hand the Spaniard his first loss at SW19 in three editions. The second seed was a double defending champion, and his last loss at Wimbledon incidentally also came against Sinner back in the 2022 edition.

Sinner bounces back in style

However, this triumph from the Italian was not long after he had faced his toughest loss on the tour to the very same relentless Alcaraz. 35 days ago, at the French Open final, Sinner had messed up three championship points to allow Alcaraz a look in and eventually win the title. It was a difficult mental baggage to get off his back, as it was also his fifth straight loss to the Spaniard.

Most felt that the French Open final would have an impact on Sinner’s mind, and Alcaraz might be a favorite once again because of that. The Italian defied all odds to bounce back and lift his first-ever trophy at the All England Club.

Alcaraz lauds Sinner after Wimbledon loss

In his post-match press conference, Carlos Alcaraz was asked about Sinner’s remarkable turnaround and whether he was surprised by it. “Not at all. He didn’t surprise me at all. Because I know he’s a huge champion. Champions learn from the… I’m not gonna say failures. But they learn from the losses. I knew at the start that he was going to learn from that final. Not gonna make the same mistakes he did in the French Open final.”

The Spaniard was very clear about the fact that he didn’t expect Sinner to be bogged down by the previous loss. He expected the Italian to learn from the losses and come back as a better player.

He further added, “The way he played today was really really high and I wasn’t surprised at all. I knew he was going to play like this. He didn’t surprise me at all because I know he’s a big champion.”

Alcaraz also mentioned that Sinner was playing at a very high level right through the match. He also graciously continued to call Sinner a champion, marking a good rapport between the players.

Both players have consistently shown immense respect for each other on numerous occasions, and this answer is another testament to that. As the tour moves to the North American hard courts, Alcaraz will next be seen in two weeks at the Rogers Cup Masters event in Toronto. Fans will be excited to see if this pair can make it to another final against each other.
