In a complete rollercoaster of a match, which even had U.S. President Donald Trump in attendance, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4 to win the US Open title and reclaim the world No. 1 ranking.

A match that will likely be remembered more for its drama and stakes than for its quality saw Alcaraz overcome not only Sinner, but also the infamous Arthur Ashe Stadium roof, to win his second US Open title and his sixth Grand Slam overall.

How the Match Unfolded

With the start delayed by thirty minutes due to security protocols, Carlos Alcaraz began the final exactly where he had left off in the semifinal, playing with supreme confidence and redlining his forehand. He earned an early break, which set the tone for the opener. Remarkably, he dropped just three points on serve in the first set, breaking Jannik Sinner once again to close it out 6-2.

Sinner, the defending champion and current World No. 1, looked out of sorts early and almost dropped serve in the opening game of the second set. But from there, he fought back, raised his level, and with some help from the Spaniard, went up a break. Both players then held serve for the remainder of the set, and Sinner leveled the match at one set all, despite still not playing anywhere near his best tennis.

That would be the last time Sinner was truly in the match. What followed was arguably the best hard-court tennis of Carlos Alcaraz’s career. The third set flew by in just over 20 minutes, with Alcaraz racing to a 5-0 lead before closing it out 6-1.

The fourth set proved to be the most competitive, with both players recognizing the moment. Unfortunately for Jannik Sinner, his first serve completely abandoned him, landing at just 36%. Under constant pressure, he was broken in the fifth game. From there, not even Sinner’s trademark “lockdown mode” could deter Alcaraz, who sealed the victory with a wide serve, eerily similar to his championship-winning point in 2022.

The discrepancy in serving performance proved decisive: Alcaraz hit more aces, committed fewer double faults, landed a higher percentage of first serves, and won more points on both first and second serve. Combined with a tally of over 40 winners, it was a commanding performance.

What It Means

With this victory, Carlos Alcaraz returns to the No. 1 ranking after a two-year wait. He has now won multiple major titles on all three surfaces, joining Mats Wilander, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic as the only players to achieve that feat. This is arguably the most important win of his career, defeating his great rival on a surface where he has often faced difficulties.

Jannik Sinner may feel that he has missed a significant opportunity. Although he secured two major titles earlier in the season, he has now lost seven of his last eight matches against Alcaraz. With many points still to defend before the end of the year, Sinner will need to regroup quickly and find new strategies to improve in this rivalry.

This concludes this year’s US Open–a tournament that began with Carlos Alcaraz looking like the best player in the field and ended with him proving exactly that, winning the title and reclaiming the world No.1 ranking.
