Carlos Alcaraz delivered a composed performance to defeat Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4 in the Miami Open round of 64 last Friday. The Spaniard controlled key moments, saving all break points he faced in a match that tested both players.
Fonseca pushed the world number one with aggressive shot-making, continuing a strong stretch that also included a tight loss to Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells.
Facing the top two players in back-to-back tournaments will certainly help to accelerate his development.
Alcaraz, however, sees clear areas where the Brazilian star can improve and hearing him out could boost the 19-year-old’s growth.
Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz highlighted a specific area Fonseca must refine.
“He reminds me of when I was his age. He should choose the better option. Sometimes he misses a lot of easy shots because he doesn’t choose the right ball in certain situations,” he said according to TennisONE App.
The Spaniard added: “I’m pretty sure he’s going to get that in the future. But playing the #2 and #1 in back-to-back tournaments, I’m pretty sure he’s going to get that feedback”
The world number one’s comments underline how small decisions can define matches at the highest level. Fonseca’s power is evident, but shot selection remains a work in progress.
Beyond the result, Alcaraz continues to build a unique record on the ATP Tour. Since making his debut as a 16-year-old at the 2020 Rio Open, he has never lost to a younger opponent.
Now 22, that run still stands, reflecting his rapid progression and consistency against emerging talent.
However, the next generation is closing in. Players like Fonseca, Learner Tien and Jakub Mensik are rising quickly and beginning to challenge the established order.
It now feels like only a matter of time before that streak is tested seriously.
