Carlos Alcaraz was pushed to three sets by Tomas Martin Etcheverry before coming through their Monte-Carlo Masters round-of-16 match.
Alcaraz lost the second set to the Argentine but recovered well, eventually sealing a place in the quarter-finals.
He now faces Alexander Bublik for the first time as he continues his title defence in Monte Carlo.
After beating Etcheverry, Alcaraz posted a message to his opponent on Instagram:
The world number one jumped into the comments section of Etcheverry’s post after their match at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Alcaraz showed his respect by writing, “Tomi, great match. What a champ you are.”
This was their first meeting since 2020 when they faced off at a Challenger event in Trieste.
Alcaraz also won that encounter, taking it in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 on clay.
Etcheverry’s run in Monte Carlo has pushed him up to world number 29, marking another step forward in his rise up the rankings.
Alcaraz is still finding his feet in Monte-Carlo, which isn’t surprising given the recent shift from hard courts.
But his struggles in the second set against Etcheverry showed a concern that he’ll need to address.
The Spaniard hit 23 unforced errors, dropping his first set of the clay-court season. It’s the kind of dip that top opponents are likely to exploit more harshly.
Bublik, his next opponent, won’t need an invitation to capitalise if Alcaraz doesn’t tighten up.
