Carlos Alcaraz is back home in Murcia getting ready for the Monte Carlo Masters.
After a hot start to the season with 16 straight wins, he’s dropped two of his last three matches. He’ll be looking to reset as he heads into his first tournament on clay this year.
Sinner has been dominating lately, picking up titles at both Indian Wells and Miami. He’s expected to be Alcaraz’s main competition in Monaco.
Even with Sinner playing so well, Alcaraz will still likely be seen as the player to beat in Monte Carlo.
When the Monte Carlo Masters wraps up on April 12, Carlos Alcaraz will have matched Jannik Sinner’s 66 weeks as world number one.
Sinner held that spot for 66 straight weeks from June 2024 until September 2025, only losing it after his defeat to Alcaraz in the US Open final.
Alcaraz is currently in his second spell as world number one, having first reached the top back in July 2022. He now holds two of the longest streaks since Novak Djokovic last led the rankings: a 37-week run and his current spell that will hit 23 weeks after Monte Carlo.
If both players are aiming for history, they’ve still got a long way to go. Novak Djokovic set an enormous standard with a record 428 weeks at number one.
Daniil Medvedev also had a lengthy stretch recently, holding the top spot for just over a year before being overtaken by Sinner.
If Alcaraz can stay at the top through April and May, he’ll move past Stefan Edberg into sole possession of eleventh place on the all-time list with over 72 weeks. A few more months beyond that would see him surpass Lleyton Hewitt’s mark of eighty weeks.
Roger Federer holds the record for most consecutive weeks as world number one, spending 237 straight weeks at the top between February 2004 and August 2008.
Jimmy Connors comes in second with a run of 160 consecutive weeks.
Ivan Lendl is third on the list. The seven-time Grand Slam champion was at number one for 157 straight weeks from September 1985 to September 1988.
Novak Djokovic and Pete Sampras round out the top five, having spent 122 and 102 consecutive weeks in the top spot, respectively.
