World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the Davis Cup Finals, according to breaking reports from the Spanish camp, after medical tests in Bologna confirmed a hamstring issue more serious than initially expected.
Alcaraz, who required a medical timeout during Sunday’s ATP Finals championship match against Jannik Sinner, had travelled to Bologna Monday to undergo an MRI exam to assess the severity of the injury. While he was able to finish the match in Turin without obvious signs of severe discomfort, the scan reportedly revealed some issues, which significantly raised concerns about potential aggravation or a full tear if he attempted to compete this week.
Despite his arrival in Bologna earlier, Alcaraz’s participation was always dependent on medical clearance. Once the MRI results came in, Spanish team officials immediately determined that the risk of developing into a major tear was too high for their top player. As a result, the decision was made that Alcaraz will not play any part in the Davis Cup Finals.
Spain will now compete without both their No.1 and No.2 singles players, with Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreno Busta expected to take over singles duties. Marcel Granollers will anchor the doubles team alongside Pedro Martinez.
It is an unfortunate way for Carlos Alcaraz’s 2025 season to end—cut short by injury rather than finishing the events he had committed to. Nevertheless, it does not diminish what has been a career-defining year, featuring an extraordinary 71–9 record, eight titles, including two Majors and three Masters 1000 crowns, and reclaiming the year-end No.1 ranking for the first time since 2022.
All attention now turns to rehabilitation and recovery as Alcaraz prepares for what promises to be a pivotal 2026 season, for both his career trajectory and his rivalry with Jannik Sinner.
