American women’s tennis has had another strong year, with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula among the standout performers.
Gauff has come a long way since her teenage years, when she first caught the attention of Roger Federer. Since then, she has continued to make strides on the WTA Tour.
Now a two-time Grand Slam champion, the 21-year-old added to her tally this season with a victory at Roland Garros.
That followed Madison Keys’ win at the Australian Open, while Amanda Anisimova made it to the finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open later in the year.
Gauff is set to finish the season ranked third in the world, just ahead of Anisimova in fourth, while Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys sit in sixth and seventh respectively.
It is a milestone achievement for American tennis, marking the first time since 2004 that four American women will end the year inside the top 10.
That year featured Serena and Venus Williams alongside Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati, all finishing within the top 10.
The outlook for American women’s tennis has rarely been brighter. With four players already inside the WTA’s top 10, there is a sense that number could climb even higher before long.
Emma Navarro is knocking on the door once again after spending time there last year, but many feel it is Iva Jovic, just 17 years old, who might be next to make that leap.
Over on the men’s side of things, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have made it difficult for any Americans to really break through in a big way.
The duo split this season’s Grand Slam titles between them – just as they did last year – though Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton both managed to hold on to spots inside the ATP top 10 by year-end.
Tommy Paul sits at No.20 for now, while teenager Learner Tien continues his rise up the ranks with growing attention around what he might become.
