Coco Gauff Makes History by Completing Rare WTA 1000 Quarterfinals Milestone

Coco Gauff made history at the Miami Open on Monday. The American star completed a rare career milestone by reaching the quarterfinals here for the first time. The secret to her victory, however, came from an unlikely source.

She admitted that some advice she saw online actually helped her during her Miami Open Round of 16 match.

“Honestly, I saw a tweet that said I should go to the net more. I was like ‘Yeah you’re right I win a lot of net points,'” Coco Gauff said in the post-match interview. That approach helped her beat Sorana Cîrstea 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Monday.

Coco Gauff has previously lost at Miami to Iga Swiatek in 2022, Caroline Garcia in 2024, and Magda Linette in 2025.

However, with this win, Gauff has now reached at least the quarterfinals at all 10 WTA 1000 events on the calendar, with Miami being the last one she needed to check off. Moreover, achieving that milestone at just 22 years old makes the accomplishment even more remarkable.

She also admitted, “I was just hoping I didn’t miss the volley in the net, because I’ve done that a couple times, but I was just focused on just hitting it over the net.”

That adjustment didn’t come out of nowhere either, as Gauff has had a mixed run in recent months, going 0-2 on grass and struggling to find consistency during the North American hard-court swing.

Now the question is whether she can carry this confidence to the net in her next match.

Coco Gauff Opens Up on Her Growth

The 22-year-old spoke candidly about her progress at the net.

“Obviously not the best volleyer, but definitely not the worst,” Coco Gauff said, while emphasizing, “the volleys are the easiest play because this is the least amount of thinking. So it’s really hard to overthink a volley.”

Beyond the technical side, playing at the Miami Open brings its own pressure, as Gauff admitted, “there’s always that extra layer. You just see familiar faces in the crowd, and you don’t want to disappoint them.”

That added attention can make it tougher, especially when she feels the expectation not to disappoint those watching her closely.

This year, though, she’s taken a different approach. “I just came with the mentality of just trying to enjoy the environment in the match instead of maybe focusing on the result,” the ranked World No. 4 said.

With that mindset paying off, Coco Gauff has improved to 14-5 this season and now looks ahead to the quarterfinals, where she’s set to face either Belinda Bencic or Amanda Anisimova on Tuesday, March 24.
