Coco Gauff had another impressive year on the WTA Tour in 2025, highlighted by two title wins.

Coco Gauff capped another strong year on the WTA Tour in 2025, collecting two titles — including her second career Grand Slam at the French Open — and finishing third in the year-end rankings behind Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. But despite her success on clay, she struggled to make deep runs at the other majors, exiting early at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Now, Gauff has opened up about one particularly emotional moment in New York, revealing why crying on court helped her rather than hindered her.

Gauff opens up about showing vulnerability at the US Open

Reflecting on her mindset earlier in her career, Gauff told FN that she once felt pressure to be “perfect” because of the expectations surrounding her. Over time, she realised that the athletes she admired were those who weren’t afraid to show vulnerability.

“At the US Open this year, I was crying to get through the match, and I ended up winning,” she said. “Vulnerability is okay, and the best athletes in the world have vulnerable times. That’s not something you should dim — it’s something you should show light to.”

Gauff emphasised that authenticity matters far more than projecting flawlessness, noting that “no one’s life is up all the time” and it’s how you respond in difficult moments that defines you.

Gauff reflects on highs and lows of her 2025 season

Despite being only 21, Gauff spoke with remarkable maturity about a season filled with both triumphs and setbacks. She described starting the year well before hitting a dip between the American swing and the Middle East, then regaining form during the clay season — ultimately finishing strong with titles in Wuhan and at Roland Garros.

She closed out 2025 with a 48–16 record and now owns 11 career WTA singles titles. With a title defence at the 2026 United Cup ahead, the trajectory remains overwhelmingly positive for one of tennis’s brightest young stars.
