Coco Gauff secured her first singles title since winning the French Open in Wuhan. She overcame World No. 3 and her former doubles partner, Jessica Pegula. It is Gauff’s third WTA 1000 title, and her first of 2025 after final losses at the Madrid Open and Italian Open. Gauff also created a record by beating her compatriot at the Wuhan Open.
Gauff became an 11-time WTA title champion in Wuhan. Two were at Grand Slam level, one at the WTA Finals, three at WTA 1000 tournaments, and five at either 500 or 250 level. The 21-year-old has lost three finals, including at the 2022 French Open to Iga Swiatek. All three of her runner-up placings were at clay-court tournaments, and she holds a 2-3 record in finals on the dirt.
By contrast, Gauff has a perfect 9-0 record in hard court finals. The world No. 3 became the first woman in tennis history to win her first nine hard-court finals when she overcame Pegula at the Wuhan Open. Gauff’s hard-court final triumphs were at the Linz Open, Emilia Romagna Open, twice at the ASB Classic in Auckland, Citi DC Open, Cincinnati Open, US Open, China Open, and the WTA Finals.
It is incredible for Gauff to achieve something that legendary figures like Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, and Martina Navratilova did not. Despite still being so young, she has one of the best mentalities in tennis. Her record in hard-court finals and finals overall is a testament to the two-time Grand Slam winner’s maturity and composure.
Gauff will try to finish the 2025 season by retaining her WTA Finals title. The worldwide fan favorite recently qualified for the year-end championship in Riyadh. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the favorite at each hard-court event she enters, but Gauff’s form and her heroics in Riyadh last year give her a great chance.
