Coco Gauff has something to say to her critics. After a recent Miu Miu photoshoot caused a lot of negative comments about her looks online, the tennis star made an 8-minute video on TikTok to talk about it.
After seeing mixed reactions to her photos, Coco Gauff responded to the criticism, explaining that while Miu Miu set the aesthetic, she made the final choices on the look.
“I’m not gonna apologize for the way that my hair looked because there are other girls who have the exact same hair as me, and I just wanted them to see, feel represented that your hair is literally fine the way it is,” she said.

Gauff also explained that the photos were not from a professional production shoot. Instead, she organized a simple photo session in her parents’ backyard with her social media strategist after getting a concept brief from the brand.
For those who missed, Coco Gauff wore a red collared shirt, paired with a cobalt blue mini skirt, white ankle socks, and brushed leather penny loafers, choosing no makeup and a simple hair bun to complete the look.
She further made it clear she wasn’t criticizing others, adding, “I’m not hating on people who do that because I am someone who also will put on a full face of makeup just to take photos.”
“It’s just that day I didn’t want to do it because (of) the creative concept; that was not the point of it,” she added.
Her candid response resonated with a global audience, earning the TikTok video over 6.4 million views.
Gauff used the moment to share a broader message on self-expression.
In the video, Coco Gauff also shared a message for Black girls with kinky hair, encouraging them to express themselves freely without worrying about others’ opinions.
“Black girls out there who have kinky hair like me: do what you want to do with your hair,” the 22-year-old said.
She also suggested that much of the criticism comes from personal insecurity. “Because at the end of the day, people who hate on your appearance and the way that you look have something deeply insecure about themselves,” she said.
Gauff further added that people should not judge others for wearing “wigs, weaves, or full face makeup,” noting that she does the same at times.
