Coco Gauff surges into Cincinnati Open Quarter-Finals as former champion makes light work of Lucia Bronzetti

Coco Gauff will return to the Quarter-Finals of the 2025 Cincinnati Open in short order after taking down Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 19 minutes with the second seed continuing her good run so far this week.

Good run in that she saw off Wang Xinyu with relative ease before then receiving a walk-over due to Dayana Yastremska withdrawing. As a result she has not played in four days and despite potential rust, she showed no signs of that in taking down the Italian.

She has now reached the last eight of a tournament for the first time since claiming her second major title at the 2025 French Open. Since then she has not found it easy losing to Yastremska at Wimbledon and also finding her serve again becoming a problem as she lost 6-1, 6-4 to rising Canadian, Victoria Mboko.

But she went on to secure the title alongside McCartney Kessler in the doubles so was a confidence boost and she headed to Cincinnati with a more measured approach. A happier hunting ground and ahead of the US Open, she will hope to make tracks this year after losing to Emma Navarro for the second time in as many Grand Slams back in 2024.

Not having to defend the title at Flushing Meadows could yet be the tonic as she heads in with more freedom aiming to excel in front of her home crowd. She advanced to her fifth Quarter-Final at WTA 1000 or Grand Slam level in 2025. That is out of only 10 tournaments with it either being that she loses early or she manages to head towards the latter stages. She will next face either Jasmine Paolini or Barbora Krejcikova who will face each other in a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final.

“For the most part I played aggressive. Maybe got a bit passive in some of those games. But it’s tough. The balls are super light and they fly. She wasn’t giving me much pace. I was trying to play with control but also aggressive. For the most part I think I did well. I had chances in a couple of those games. I missed a couple balls. But I learned from it and was able to close it out," said Gauff immediately on court after sealing the win.
