Coco Gauff is into the second week of the US Open after surging past Magdalena Frech in a 6-3, 6-1 win. Gaining more control on her serve, the third seed is into the last 16 after a dominant display.

It has been a bit of an aberration at times for Gauff who has had to hire a new mechanics coach ahead of the US Open in order to try and stabilize the only part of her game that has faltered. But she hasn't got it right yet until today as she was more stable on the baseline and with her serve giving Frech no chance.

Gauff was in tears during her second round win over Donna Vekic such were her struggles on serve. But since winning the French Open in June, she has been plagued by those issues. But trying to remodel her serve has been understandably stressful. She looked more relaxed from the start. She surged away on the Frech serve with three early break points. She dispatched a forehand winner and broke to lead 2-0.

Frech held for the first time to reduce the arrears to 3-1. Gauff threw in a few errors including a first double fault. She handed a break back to Frech to lead 3-2 narrowly. Gauff was a bit hard to watch at this juncture as she was obviously suffering mentally but she managed to put it away as she went 4-3 up.

It went to a deuce and Gauff had her third break point and she takes it. Arthur Ashe rose as the American was set to serve for the opening set at 5-3 up. Gauff was looking a little more relaxed and brought up two set points at 40-15. A cross-court forehand battle saw Frech hit it long and Gauff secured the set 6-3.

She started to thrive again as she broke Frech for a 6-3, 2-1 and came out on top of a superb rally for 30-30 on serve. She produced a forehand slice winner and Frech misfired allowing Gauff to take command for 3-1.

She was ripping through the games as she led 6-3, 5-1. She went 30-0 up on Frech's serve and brought up three match points. Gauff hit it long on the first and Frech hit long on the second. It was a gutsy return for Gauff after crying on court.

“I thought today I played well. Overall I’m really happy. It’s been an emotional week but I needed those tough moments to move forward. I had fun out there. I’m so privileged to walk on to this court and have your support," said Gauff.
