Carlos Alcaraz is now a six-time Grand Slam champion- the second youngest man to reach the tally. In the recently concluded US Open, he reached the final without dropping a set.
One against Jannik Sinner, he lost a set. He ended the tournament by winning 98 of his 101 service games and was broken just once in the final. He is praised a lot for his serves, and Spain’s Davis Cup captain David Ferrer also lauded his compatriot for his improvement. Ferrer told Marca:
For me, it was the best Grand Slam he has won in terms of his tennis. The improvement in the serve… If you look at the match point in the 2022 final against Casper [Ruud] and compare it to the match point he had the other day against Jannik Sinner, you can see that evolution of the serve, right? It shows you that he’s a player who wants to evolve every year.
The win helped the 22-year-old dethrone Sinner from the top of the rankings table, also ending his 65-week reign. Alcaraz has reached the top position for the first time since September 2023. Sinner still has a chance to reclaim his spot, as the gap between them is not much.
They will both be playing the China Open, where Alcaraz will be bidding to defend his title. The Murcia native defeated Sinner last year in the tournament to clinch his first title on the Asian swing.
Jannik Sinner played better than Carlos Alcaraz when they faced off in the Wimbledon final; instead of extending the match to the deciding set, the Italian ended the match in four sets to become a champion at SW19 for the first time in his career. He also denied Alcaraz a three-peat.
Sinner, however, it seemed did not play to his full potential in the US Open final. But Uncle Toni Nadal, in his column for El Pais, wrote that even if Sinner had produced his best, the way Alcaraz was performing, he still would have lost it.
I think that, very wisely, both Alcaraz and his coaching team took note of what happened in their last meeting at Wimbledon. On that occasion, the lack of variety in his shots had allowed Sinner to impose his own style. This time, however, it was Alcaraz who dictated the pace of the match from the beginning. Jannik was completely overwhelmed by the intensity, variety, and quality of his opponent’s shots.
Alcaraz and Sinner have now featured in three straight Grand Slam finals. Since 2024, Sinner has suffered defeats only 11 times; seven of the losses came from Alcaraz.
This year, they have met five times, and only once Sinner clinched the win, at Wimbledon. He lost the Italian Open, French Open, and the US Open, while at the Cincinnati Masters, Sinner handed the walkover to the Murcia native because of an injury.
Sinner, though he failed to defend the New York Slam, played every final in Grand Slam events this season, becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to do so. Alcaraz featured in three Grand Slam finals as Novak Djokovic knocked him out of the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Last year on the Asian swing, while Alcaraz beat him in Beijing, Sinner went on to defeat Djokovic in the Shanghai Masters final before beating Taylor Fritz to clinch the ATP Finals. Sinner and Alcaraz have so far taken home two and seven titles, respectively, this season. The World No.2 clinched the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz, apart from two ATP 500 titles, bagged five Big Titles (three Masters 1000s and two Grand Slam ones).
