Argentine star Camilo Ugo Carabelli spoke candidly about his lack of interest in doubles after falling in his Roland Garros debut. The world No. 51 was defeated in the first round by Jaume Munar with a score of 4-6, 1-6, 5-7 and was clearly not happy in his post-match interview.
The 25-year-old made some striking statements regarding doubles after his early exit from the French Open. With only three previous main draw appearances at a Grand Slam, Carabelli couldn't secure a victory and was eliminated from the singles draw. Still alive in the doubles, the South American didn't give much importance to his participation there.
Carabelli responded to an interview with ESPN Latinamerica after his loss to Munar. The interviewer asked him about his doubles participation alongside Chinese player Bu Yunchaokete, where they face specialists Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and Narayanaswamy Balaji.
"Honestly, I have no idea about my opponents, and I don't really care much. I don't give much thought to doubles," the South American stated with an evident look of disappointment.
"I don't even know if we're going to play. Communication with my partner is complicated because he's Chinese," he frankly admitted about his partner, Yunchaokete Bu. "We'll talk tomorrow to see what we do, but honestly, doubles means nothing to me."
Carabelli, accustomed to playing in Challenger tournaments, this year reached semifinals at the ATP 500 Rio Open and the Chile Open, both on the Golden-Swing in South America on clay courts. However, the European clay-court swing didn't go the same way for Carabelli, who fell in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open, in addition to the second round of the Rome Open (a win against Pablo Carreño Busta in the first round).
A week ago, he secured one of the best wins of his career against his compatriot Sebastian Baez at the Bad Homburg Open and arrived at Roland Garros with good confidence. However, he could do little against an inspired Munar and made an early exit from the French Open. For the moment, he reaches world No. 50 in the live ranking, though he will probably drop a couple of positions by the end of the tournament.
