Emma Raducanu’s 2025 campaign has come to an end, with the British No.1 forced to withdraw from her final two tournaments of the year in Tokyo and Hong Kong due to illness. The 22-year-old has been struggling physically over the past ten days, receiving medical attention during her last two matches in China and ultimately deciding to fly home to recover before beginning preparations for the 2026 season.

Physical Struggles Take Their Toll

Raducanu’s decision to end her season early comes after a difficult few weeks on the WTA Tour. She has lost four of her last five matches. In two of those losses, she held match points but failed to close out victory, while in the other two she was forced to stop mid-match or battle through visible discomfort.

In Wuhan, she retired when trailing 6-1 4-1 to Ann Li, having had her blood pressure checked on court during sweltering conditions. Just days later at the Ningbo Open, Raducanu fell to World No.219 Zhu Lin in three sets, struggling with movement late in the match as her recurring lower back issue flared up again. The defeat marked her third consecutive early exit, bringing an otherwise encouraging season to a disappointing close.

Best Tennis Since 2021, but a Frustrating Finish

Despite the difficult finish, Raducanu’s 2025 season featured flashes of her best form since her historic US Open triumph four years ago. She won 28 matches, reached the semi-finals in Washington, and made the quarterfinals in Miami, where she defeated then–top-10 player Emma Navarro before losing in three tight sets to Jessica Pegula.

Her level through the middle part of the season, including a near-upset of world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati, showed that she remains capable of competing with the best when healthy and confident. However, the recent string of physical setbacks has thrown her hopes of securing a seeding for the 2026 Australian Open into doubt.

Coaching Stability at Last

While health has been a recurring concern, coaching changes have been another consistent theme throughout Raducanu’s young career. Since her 2021 breakthrough, she has worked with a series of coaches, including Mark Petchey, Sebastian Sachs, and Dmitry Tursunov–all of whom had brief stints.

But for the first time in years, stability may be on the horizon. Raducanu and Francisco Roig, Rafael Nadal’s former long-time coach, have agreed to extend their partnership into next season after a successful four-month trial. Roig began working with her ahead of the US Open, and the pair are expected to hold a full training block at the end of the year to prepare for 2026.

After a season that mixed progress with setbacks, Raducanu will now look to regroup physically and mentally, aiming to return stronger next year–with renewed health, a steady team, and the hope of finally building on the momentum she rediscovered in 2025.
