Entry List ATP Winston-Salem Open 2025: Arthur Fils and Sebastian Korda aim for hardcourt form
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The ATP Entry List for the Winston-Salem Open, scheduled from August 17th to 23rd, has been revealed. This tournament will be the final stop before the US Open, with the final taking place just two days before the start of the year's last Grand Slam.

This hasn't deterred several top players from entering the tournament, led by Arthur Fils, and American hopes Sebastian Korda and Alex Michelsen. The ATP 250 category tournament offers a good opportunity to accumulate matches on hardcourts and enhance preparation for the final major of the season.

It will be a good chance for several players to earn points and build confidence on hardcourts. Names like Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Gabriel Diallo promise to deliver exciting tennis.

It will be a very open draw with no clear favorites, especially considering that the top seeds are not in their best physical condition. The tournament's last champion is Lorenzo Sonego – also present in the draw – who defeated Michelsen in the 2024 final. Other former champions included are Sebastian Baez, Adrian Mannarino, and Pablo Carreño Busta.

Arthur Fils aims for rhythm after injury layoff

The 21-year-old Frenchman, Arthur Fils, will surely be looking to regain match rhythm after suffering an injury that has kept him out of competition for two months. Fils is expected to make his return at the Canadian Open, although given his lack of recent match play, it wouldn wouldn't be surprising to see him exit the tournament early. He's eyeing Winston-Salem as a safeguard in case he can't get enough hardcourt matches in North America.

This isn't too different from Sebastian Korda's situation. He has already confirmed that he won't be playing the Canadian Open and will only return in Cincinnati – where he will be the 32nd seed. The talented American has fallen in the rankings after a year without sufficient consistency. At Roland Garros, he seemed to find great form, reaching the third round, but an injury prevented him from participating in the grass-swing, missing Wimbledon due to another physical setback.

Americans Alex Michelsen, Learner Tien, and Aleksandar Kovacevic will be among the local players entered and will be names to watch in the draw. While Michelsen and Tien haven't had standout performances in recent months, the hardcourt swing offers a good opportunity on their preferred surface. The opposite is true for Kovacevic, who usually competes in Challenger tournaments but is in good form after reaching the second final of his career last week, losing to Denis Shapovalov.

Players to watch in the draw

Gabriel Diallo is one of the players who has been making waves this season, with a strong baseline game and a particularly effective serve. The Canadian recently secured the first title of his career on the grass courts of the Libema Open, defeating strong opponents like Karen Khachanov and Ugo Humbert along the way. He also put up a good fight against Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon before falling in the second round, and at 23 years old, he has reached a career-high ranking of world No. 35. This is quite remarkable for the Canadian, who a year ago had never entered the top 150 and started 2025 as world No. 87.

The experienced Roberto Bautista Agut is another player looking to secure victories. The Spanish former world No. 9 is always a dangerous name to consider, and in the last couple of months, the 37-year-old has found confidence, including wins over 2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik and the always tricky Holger Rune.

Furthermore, special attention will be on Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who, back on hardcourts, has the potential to surprise anyone. The Frenchman can easily be considered among the top three servers on the Tour (and it wouldn't be too audacious to call him the best server currently). Without major results in the European swing, he will be a name to follow at this point in the year.

Interesting names in qualifying

Some interesting names in the qualifying draw are vying for a spot in the main draw, led by Rinky Hijikata. Results from previous weeks could lead to several players withdrawing from Winston-Salem at the last minute, which is common in the week leading up to a Grand Slam. This could see the return of Chinese young star Juncheng Shang, as well as notable names like Borna Coric, Nicolas Jarry, Adrian Mannarino, and Pablo Carreño Busta.
