'Every match has been a struggle since…,' Boris Becker identifies the moment Novak Djokovic ‘lost his magic’
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Boris Becker believes Novak Djokovic lost his magic when Jannik Sinner defeated him first in singles and then in doubles in last year’s Davis Cup semifinal between Serbia and Italy in Malaga. Sinner then went on to lead Italy to glory by beating Australia 2-0 in the final.

Becker, who coached the Serb between 2013 and 2016, thinks the defeat to Sinner hurt Djokovic a lot and since then, he has failed to recover. Djokovic succumbed to a defeat to Sinner in this year’s Australian Open semifinal as well and subsequently lost three tournaments without advancing to the final.

I think losing the Davis Cup for Serbia hurt him a lot. That took a lot of juice away from him and some of his magic. This year he has not been the same. He has never got his best form and every match has been a struggle. Boris Becker told Tennis 365

Two days ago, Djokovic turned 37, but he has no plans to retire. Although he is skipping tournaments, one after the other, his major goal of the year is to achieve milestones in Grand Slam events. Becker believes Djokovic will get his mojo back at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic’s split with Goran Ivanisevic surprises Boris Becker

Amidst Novak Djokovic‘s struggle to find his form, he parted ways with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic. The 52-year-old Croat has worked with Djokovic since 2018 and became his main coach in 2022. During that period, Djokovic won 12 Grand Slam titles.

Shortly before the clay season in March this year, Djokovic announced that he had ended his partnership with Ivanisevic, and this surprised Boris Becker. The 56-year-old German questioned the timing of the split and Djokovic’s joining hands with Serbian coach Nenad Zimonjic

All good things come to an end, and they have had an incredible partnership together. I think they have won 12 Grand Slams. But normally you make this kind of change in November or December. So doing this in March was surprising for me. Boris Becker said

Becker said that Djokovic sometimes needs words of wisdom, especially during Grand Slam events, and is unsure if Nenand will be able to fulfill this duty.

Djokovic is in Geneva, Switzerland for an ATP 250 event. He made it to the semifinal by beating Yannick Hanfmann and Tallon Griekspoor to set up the clash against Tomas Machac. After the Geneva Open, the Serb will face unseeded Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round of Roland Garros.
