First men's Wimbledon shock dealt as Daniil Medvedev dumped out by Benjamin Bonzi

Daniil Medvedev reached the final of the Halle Open last week but he won't be continuing his grass court exploits any longer than today at Wimbledon after he was unceremoniously dumped out by Benjamin Bonzi 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Medvedev has had a poor year compared to his usual top five exploits. He was ranked inside the top five at the start and famously last season he should've perhaps beaten Jannik Sinner in Australia before he was hit back and Sinner went on to win the title.

The Russian lost in round two in Australia this time around defending those points and also now loses another glut of points as he won't defend his Wimbledon haul from last year. He reached the semi-finals last year at SW19 as well as 2023.

So ordinarily like his Halle run, he is a usual scratch to make the latter stages. But this time he wasn't. It was the first time he has lost in the first round of the grass court major.

On the hottest opening day ever at the grass court major, it proved to be a storm that Medvedev couldn't weather but the Frenchman could reaching the second round for the third time in his career.

“This is special for me today,” said Bonzi in his on-court interview. “This is my first Top 10 win at a Slam. Obviously, it is always special at this tournament. The atmosphere, all the courts and the grass, everything really. I love this place, so it’s very special and

"Daniil is a great player. He has reached two semi-finals. I knew it was a tough match, but sometimes it is better to play this kind of player in the first round. Anything can happen, so I’m very happy with the win.”

Next up for Bonzi will take on Vit Kopriva or Jordan Thompson for the second top 10 win of his career.
