First quarterfinal since Tokyo: Bianca Andreescu finds her stride on strong performance against Lulu Sun

Bianca Andreescu overcame a tough second-round challenge at the Libema Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, defeating seventh seed Lulu Sun to reach her first tournament quarterfinal since the Tokyo Open in 2024. The Canadian continues to show strong form since returning from a long injury layoff and is now set to face qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

The former US Open champion had little trouble against Sun, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist a year ago, securing a comfortable 6-0, 6-4 victory. This marks Andreescu's first main draw appearance in a tournament since the Rome Open, after she failed to qualify for Roland Garros.

First Set: A Dominant Start

The match started entirely in Andreescu's favor, as she capitalized on numerous unforced errors from the world No. 43. Two consecutive breaks and an 11-point streak quickly put her up 4-0. Sun's struggles continued through the set, with Andreescu securing a third consecutive break.

Serving for the set, "Bia" saved a couple of break points before closing it out with a commanding 6-0. She won an impressive 68% of her service points and a remarkable 80% of return points, saving both break points against her and converting three out of four opportunities, showcasing high effectiveness in crucial moments.

Second Set: Maintaining Control

The second set began with a revitalized Sun. A love hold to start showed she could improve her serving numbers, boosting her first-serve effectiveness from 33% to an incredible 93%. However, Andreescu remained on track when it was her turn to serve, winning her service games without significant issues.

Sun managed to hold firm on her serve until 4-3, saving a break point in the fifth game. Yet, Andreescu brought out her best tennis in the final part of the match, securing a break that gave her the opportunity to serve for the win. The tension mounted in what was the most contested game of the match. Andreescu squandered three match points—and saved two break points against her—before finally sealing the 6-0, 6-4 victory.

In the quarterfinals, she will face qualifier Gabriela-Elena Ruse, ranked world No. 80, against whom she has no prior head-to-head encounters.
