Although the second half of the year wasn’t quite as strong, 2025 was still a fantastic year for Flavio Cobolii, one where he kept hitting new benchmarks in his career. Before 2025, he had never won an ATP title, never made the second week of a Slam, never beaten a top 10 player and never broken into the top 30. This year, he did all of that.
Cobolli’s 2025 actually started in pretty much the worst way possible. After two wins in the United Cup, he went on a 8-match losing streak at ATP level, from Auckland all the way to Miami, going as far as losing to players ranked #131 and #261. During this streak, he won a Challenger match in Phoenix before losing to a far past his prime Kei Nishikori in the second round.
While he had a terrible start, Cobolli put an end to his losing streak in the best way possible, by winning four matches in a row to win his first ever career title in Bucharest, overcoming a very strong clay court player in Sebastian Baez in the final. Although he instantly went back to his poor form after this tournament, losing early in all the Masters 1000, Munich and even a challenger in Turin, he did get his first (and only so far) career top 10 win against Holger Rune in Madrid, even if the latter retired after the first set.
A huge highlight of Cobolli’s year was his run to the title in Hamburg the week before Roland Garros; he played great tennis all week, got revenge on Tomas Etcheverry in the semifinals for his first round loss in the Australian Open, and routined Andrey Rublev in the final. He carried his good level of play into Roland Garros, but world #3 Alexander Zverev proved too much for him in the third round.
After losing to Zverev again in the Halle quarterfinals, there were no great expectations of Cobolli at Wimbledon, but he played great tennis and managed to reach his first ever Grand Slam second week without dropping a single set and routining Miami champion Jakub Mensik on the way. He then went one better, beating former finalist Marin Cilic in five sets to set up a quarterfinal clash with Novak Djokovic. He won the first set and put up some very good resistence in general, but his run eventually ended in 4 sets at the hands of the Serb. It was still a fantastic Slam run that saw him break into the top 20 for the first time in his career.
After a fantastic first half of the season, Cobolli really struggled to win matches in the second half of the season. His best level and run probably came at the Canada Masters, where he served for the match against eventual champion Ben Shelton in the last 16. After seeing Shelton going on to win the title, his inability to close out that match will surely have been quite frustrating for the Italian. After this tournament he didn’t have another strong run in the entire year but still managed to finish the year a very respectable #22.
Despite a lackluster second half of the season, it ended in glory for Cobolli with two epic wins to secure the Davis Cup title for Italy. He clinched victory in the semifinals with an epic, 3+ hour, 17-15 third set tiebreak win over Zizou Bergs, after saving seven match points in that deciding tiebreak. He followed it up two days later by clinching the title for Italy with another epic win over Jaume Munar after being down a set and a break.
These epic victories will surely give Cobolli a lot of confidence ahead of what he hopes is an even better 2026. He certainly has the ability to continue improving and climbing up the rankings.
