Boris Becker has huge words of praise for Carlos Alcaraz after his triumph at the French Open. The 22-year-old secured his first Grand Slam on Sunday after beating Jannik Sinner in a five-set epic final with a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.
Alcaraz’s performance in the match will be remembered for his never-say-die attitude, especially in the fourth set, where he faced three championship points in the ninth game. However, not only did he save those, but he also went on to break Sinner in the next game, making it 5-5, and eventually won the set on a tiebreak.
That performance left Becker in awe of Alcaraz's talent, and he explained his admiration during the ongoing Boss Open in Stuttgart. The 57-year-old was quoted in a report by Eurosport Germany, where he stated that he has never seen a player with the skills of Alcaraz. Becker, who won six Grand Slam titles in his career, believes that Alcaraz can find a level no other player can when he is ‘challenged’.
"The variation, the power, the feel for the ball - I don't know of any player in the history of tennis who has this combination," said Becker. "He still has a seventh gear. For me, he's a genius. When he's challenged, tickled, motivated, he finds another level that no other player in the world has."
Becker also went on to discuss how the result would affect Sinner. He stated that Sinner would only be able to overcome the result eventually, possibly next year when he returns to play the French Open. "The whole world is talking about Alcaraz and Sinner, which is a huge compliment for our sport," he said. "Sinner needs a year to recover from this. Until he's back on this court, at this tournament. Even if he plays well until then, this defeat will still be affecting him for another year."
