After announcing his withdrawal from the 2025 US Open, Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori revealed he will no longer be working with his coach, former player Thomas Johansson.
Nishikori and Johansson began working together in February 2024, with the Swede joining the 35-year old's camp as he struggled to regain his form. Nishikori had been struggling with injury over the past few years, and Johansson, winner of the 2022 Australian Open was brought onboard to change things up.
"Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you on the situation with my coach Thomas Johansson," wrote the Japanese star on social media. "Thomas and I have decided to part ways. I would like to thank him not only for his excellent tennis knowledge, but also for his excellent team spirit. I will keep you updat ed on any further changes to my team. Thank you for your support."
The World No.65 was working towards making an appearance at the US Open this summer. However, a back injury derailed his plans, forcing him to eventually withdraw from the tournament that saw him reach his first Grand Slam final.
The former World No.3 underwent surgery in 2022, which saw his ranking drop to outside the top 300. Upon his return, Nishikori competed in several ATP Challenger events before working his way back to the main tour.
After joining forces with Johansson, Nishikori would show renewed signs of life. The Matsue native reached the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open in 2024, his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal in five years. He would finish the year ranked World No.107 after more strong performances on tour and a title victory on the Challenger level.
Nishikori would reach his first ATP level final in six years at the 2025 Hong Kong Open, boosting his ranking back into the top 100. Despite losing the final, his performance would boost his confidence enough to see him win his first round match at the 2025 Australian Open, a hard-fought five-set win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.
The 35-year old would secure a few more wins under his belt during the 2025 season, with his first round victory at the Madrid Open earning him his 450th career ATP match win.
Hi fans, unfortunately I will not be ready for the U.S. Open yet. I had an MRI taken of my back and it’s not 100% healed yet. Working hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for the support.
