American tennis star Frances Tiafoe has been fined $120,000 by the ATP following an on-court outburst during his match at the Shanghai Masters in October.
The fine was issued after Tiafoe directed explicit verbal abuse at chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote, an incident that also included what the ATP deemed "aggravated behavior."
The heated exchange occurred during the final set of his match against Roman Safiullin when Tiafoe received a time violation on a crucial second serve with the score tied at 5–5.
Tiafoe argued that he had already begun his service motion, but the umpire ruled otherwise, leading to a tense rally and eventual match loss. Frustrated by the decision, Tiafoe launched into a profanity-laden tirade, accusing the umpire of costing him the match.
While the incident resulted in one of the largest fines in ATP history, Tiafoe later expressed regret.
"I really apologize for the way I acted tonight. That is not who I am and not how I ever want to treat people. I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me," Tiafoe said in an Instagram post, as shared by edgeAI on X.
Francis Tiafoe apologies to the umpire, the tournament, and the fans for the way he acted on court during his match against Safiullin. He said the following on Instagram:

He also extended his apologies to the umpire, tournament officials and fans.
The fine, broken into $60,000 for verbal abuse and $60,000 for aggravated behavior, reflect the ATP's strict stance on sportsmanship violations. The ATP rulebook allows for fines up to $60,000 for verbal abuse, with more severe cases referred to a committee for further action.
Tiafoe’s penalty ranks as the second-highest in ATP history, next to a $152,000 fine issued to Hugo Haston earlier this year for a fourth incident of unsportsmanlike behavior on the season.
Despite this setback, the tennis star is preparing for the Australian Open in January, aiming to move past the controversy and focus on his performance.
