With the second-round action getting underway, there should be plenty of entertaining tennis for the fans to enjoy on day four at the French Open. There are 16 matches on the schedule and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match, including Holger Rune vs Emilio Nava, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Matteo Gigante, and Carlos Alcaraz vs Fabian Marozsan. But who will advance?
Ateet: Nuno Borges defeated Kyrian Jacquet in five sets, marking the first occasion in his career that he overcame a two-set disadvantage. However, this level won’t cut it against a top player like Casper Ruud, who looked solid in his opening match. I can’t see Borges winning more than a set here.
Prediction: Ruud in 4
Damian: It was a smooth opener for Ruud against the veteran Ramos-Vinolas and the Norwegian wasn’t tested. But after winning Madrid and making at least the semifinals in the three previous editions, he’s gotta have high hopes for this tournament. Borges can bother him for a while, yet possibly taking three sets seems like a little too much for the underdog.
Prediction: Ruud in 4
Tope: Ruud committed 42 unforced errors but he still managed to get past veteran Albert Ramos- Vinolas in straight sets. He no faces Nuno Borges who went all the distance against home favorite Kyrian Jacquet to earn his second win ever at Roland Garros.
This match will be their first encounter on clay, but Ruud previously defeated the Portuguese player 6-3 6-2 in the quarter-finals at Los Cabos last year. The world number eight is likely to address any concerns from his opening match, and he should have no troubles cruising into the next round.
Ateet: Both these players have a chance to make a run here as the draw is wide open in this section. Both players won their opening match in straight sets and go into this one without worrying about fatigue. I will give Tiafoe a slight advantage here, but wouldn’t be surprised if the Spaniard comes out on top.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 5
Damian: Tiafoe usually wins one match and then promptly loses the next one in almost every event this season, but it’s likely to be different here. Carreno Busta hasn’t looked that strong physically and Comesana helped him out in the opener, blowing opportunities in two sets to lose in straights. Tiafoe will snatch this one by establishing dominance in the long run.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 4
Tope: Both players delivered statement wins in their openers and if we are going to rely on that, then the Spaniard should come out on top if he can hang tough and repel the American’s agility and powerful arsenal from the baseline.
Prediction: Carreno Busta in 5
Ateet: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard benefited from the closed roof on court Suzanne Lenglen as the conditions got quicker once the roof was closed, and helped Perricard’s serve. This was the Frenchman’s first win at his home Slam. Dzumhur is a capable player on clay, but Perricard will be the favourite to win this one.
Prediction: Perricard in 4
Damian: What a clash of styles this is and with no past history, you never really know how a match like that will go. Dzumhur has the block return to combat Mpetshi Perricard’s serve and he will be making the French giant uncomfortable with his low-skidding slices or dropshots. Power contrast here is crazy, but the Bosnian knows how to navigate it.
Prediction: Dzumhur in 5
Tope: Mpetshi Perricard hasn’t been in great form for a most of this season but he appeared motivated by an enthusiastic home crowd during the first round. Dzumhur is a formidable opponent on clay, and I’ll back him to earn a win in their first meeting.
Ateet: Reilly Opelka had a good opening-round draw, and he made the most of it. This is only the second instance when Opelka has reached the second round here, and his chances don’t look good to advance any further. Navone doesn’t have a big serve like Opelka, but he does everything else better, and his movement and defense will frustrate the big man. I am taking the Argentinian to make the third round for the first time in Paris.
Prediction: Navone in 5
Damian: Navone’s ranking fell off a cliff this year, but it’s clear he’s still a force on clay. While facing somebody like Opelka is not something he does every day, his expertise in rallying on this surface should also come in handy here. A run at Roland Garros would be a good way for the Argentine to return to where he belongs ranking-wise.
Prediction: Navone in 4
Tope: Despite having a topsy-turvy season, Navone is generally more adept on clay than Opelka. He will need to exhibit patience when facing the big server, but we Navone will eventually win this match and progress to the third round for the first time in his career.
Prediction: Navone in 4
