French Open Semifinal Predictions: Coco Gauff vs Lois Boisson
Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

We are in for one of the most unexpected French Open semifinal matches in recent memory. Sure, Coco Gauff was always a favorite to get this far. But Lois Boisson? The Frenchwoman needed a wild card to into the event, and she is ranked outside the Top 300 in the world. Her run this event has been historic. Can she keep it going? Our writers share their thoughts. Predicting this match are Jordan Reynolds, Nurein Ahmed, Andreas Pelekis, Ateet Shrivastava, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will win?

French Open Semifinal Predictions

Coco Gauff vs Lois Boisson

Jordan:
The atmosphere on Court Phillippe-Chatrier will be electric for home hero Lois Boisson’s attempt to become one of the most unexpected Grand Slam finalists in tennis history. Her first five opponents struggled to handle her consistent running around to hit heavy topspin inside-out forehands, a style rarely seen in the women’s game. The French wild card’s chances cannot be ruled out after her amazing run so far. But I think Gauff’s excellent backhand will prove crucial here. Boisson’s previous opponents struggled with the spin she used and with exploiting the space she leaves down the line by running around her backhand. Gauff might need to scrap at times, but I think the world No. 2 will hold her nerve and reach the final.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Nurein:
Boisson’s run to the semis defies logic. She’s made a mockery of the gulf in rankings between herself and the top players. A top 100 breakthrough is all but secured. The inevitable can only be delayed though and Coco Gauff presents a monstrous challenge in shot and tactical clarity. Gauff’s resets rallies better than most and the moment will surely be too big for the French wild card.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Andreas:
Boisson keeps doing the impossible this tournament, and she’s one win away from becoming the first Frenchwoman in a French Open final since Mary Pierce in 2005. On the other side of the net, Gauff is looking to reach a second French Open final. Boisson’s win was arguably the more impressive, stunning Mirra Andreeva; Gauff, meanwhile, battled past Australian Open champion Madison Keys despite 41 unforced errors to just 15 winners. The American is usually rock solid under pressure and hostile crowds, but Boisson has a powerful game that could throw Gauff off balance if she can’t control her groundstrokes. Boisson may also feel the pressure with more eyes on her game during Thursday’s match. Ultimately, Gauff hasn’t looked entirely convincing this tournament, and I’m giving the slight edge to Boisson. As the underdog, she’ll continue her fairy-tale run in a thrilling win.
Prediction: Boisson in 3

Ateet:
Lois Boisson was already the story of this year’s French Open, but her win against world No.6. Mirra Andreeva takes this run to a different level altogether. She is the first ever wild card to reach the women’s singles semifinals at the French Open. She has shown amazing determination and heart and will hope to continue her dream run.

Coco Gauff was nowhere near her best against Madison Keys in the quarterfinals but did enough to win the match and is in her third French Open semifinals. She will have to improve her level against Boisson but she has been here before and her experience will be key. She will also handle the crowd better and focus on her own game. I believe Boisson’s run is going to come to an end.
Prediction: Gauff in 3

Yesh:
Who doesn’t want to see Boisson win this? She’s always had talent, but she’s never played half a match anywhere near as well as every match she’s played this week. Meanwhile, Gauff played nowhere near her best against Madison Keys. In the end, though, it won’t be enough. Gauff is just better, and that will come through eventually. No matter how amazing this story is.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
