French tennis star Caroline Garcia has withdrawn from the 2025 Rome Open, but her exit has sparked more than just headlines about a missing name in the draw—it has prompted a powerful and deeply personal reflection on the toll professional sport takes on the body and mind.

In a heartfelt message posted to her social media, Garcia candidly shared the emotional and physical struggles she has faced in recent months, calling into question the long-standing culture of glorifying pain and perseverance in elite sports.

Garcia revealed that her decision not to compete in Rome came after a long period of playing through significant pain, primarily in her shoulder. She disclosed that in order to continue competing, she had relied heavily on anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, and plasma treatments—just to manage daily discomfort.

“Recently, I relied almost entirely on anti-inflammatory medications to successfully manage the pain in my shoulder. Without them, it was unbearable. In recent months, I've received corticosteroid injections, plasma treatments, and other treatments just to keep me competing”, said Garcia “I'm not sharing this to arouse pity, or to prove I'm tough. It might even be the opposite. I'm asking myself this: Is it really reasonable to push our bodies to this extent?”

She recounted being told recently, “If you really wanted to do it, you would play through the pain,” a comment that struck a chord. Rather than taking offense, Garcia used it as a moment of reflection, noting that this belief is deeply embedded in the mindset of many athletes. “Make no mistake—greatness requires sacrifice,” she wrote, acknowledging that pain and discomfort are often part of the path to success. But she added, “There is a limit we must learn to recognize and respect.”

The 30-year-old, a former world No. 4, questioned the long-term cost of this mindset, asking if it’s truly worth waking up in pain every day at age forty as a consequence of pushing too hard, too often. “Perhaps many of the victories that society glorifies… aren’t worth that much,” she concluded, challenging fans, fellow athletes, and governing bodies to reexamine the values that define success in sport.

While it is true that society glorifies victories that face immense struggle and pain, it is also important to understand that these values sometimes have an adverse effect. Being content with one’s life and expanding at one’s own pace is also a valid way of life and it is a very heartfelt reflection from Garcia after a turbulent time in her career.
