Jack Draper’s withdrawal from the French Open is set to have a significant impact on his ranking.
The British player has played just nine matches since then, with the latest ending when he retired due to a knee problem.
This same issue has now forced Draper out of Roland Garros, and it could cost him dearly in the rankings.
Currently sitting just inside the top 50 at No. 48, Draper is expected to lose around 350 points due to missed opportunities this season, including his fourth-round appearance at last year’s French Open and a recent challenger title.
Draper had an impressive run on clay last year, making the final in Madrid, reaching the quarterfinals in Rome, and advancing to the fourth round at Roland Garros.
The 24-year-old was already set to lose 850 points after pulling out of events in Madrid and Rome. Now, his decision to skip the French Open has compounded the situation even further.
This will leave Draper with just 560 points, which would put him at number 114 in the world rankings.
Draper hasn’t been ranked this low since August 2023, following another extended absence due to a shoulder problem.
It’s a significant fall for Draper, who reached his career-high ranking of world number four less than a year ago.
Draper isn’t just missing the French Open, this could end up affecting his spot in other Grand Slam events down the line.
If he’s healthy, he should be able to get into Wimbledon without any issues, as he’ll still be inside the top 100 when the entry deadline hits.
But if things don’t pick up soon, there’s a real chance Draper might not have enough ranking points to qualify directly for the US Open later this year.
He’s made it deep into Flushing Meadows before, and that could help him secure a wildcard. But there will be plenty of competition for those spots, including from former champion Stan Wawrinka and a host of American hopefuls.
Draper is reportedly targeting a comeback during the grass-court season. He’ll need a strong return to avoid further complications with Grand Slam entries moving forward.
