Tennis star Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire while leading Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of his Wimbledon match due to an injury. When Sinner learned that Dimitrov could not continue, he assisted in packing Dimitrov’s bags.

This was a tough blow for Grigor Dimitrov, who was leading the top-ranked player in the world 6-3, 7-5, 2-2. He has now retired for a fifth consecutive Grand Slam mid-match.

After the match, Jannik Sinner praised Dimitrov for his work on the court and their friendship off it. “I don’t know what to say because he’s an incredible player,” Sinner said. “I think we all saw this today. He’s been so unlucky in the past. An incredible player, good friend of mine also, and we understand each other very well off the court, too.

“Seeing him in this position, honestly, if there would be a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve. But now, I hope he has a speedy recovery. Very unlucky from his side. I don’t take this as a win at all. This was just a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us.”

It’s been a tough year for Grigor Dimitrov

Dimitrov retired from a match at the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May, plus last year’s Wimbledon and US Open. During the match against Sinner, Dimitrov clutched his chest with his left hand before sitting on the grass court. Sinner walked over towards Dimitrov to check on him.

“My pec,” Dimitrov told Sinner. A doctor and trainer checked on Dimitrov before he headed to the locker room. When he came back to the court, he said he could not continue.

Dimitrov came into the tournament ranked No. 21 in the world. He has not won a Grand Slam singles title but has reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Dimitrov has won nine singles titles in his career and has a 476-301 record.
