The Hamburg Open will occur next week as players make their final preparations before the French Open. Entry lists for tournaments scheduled the week before Grand Slams can often be weak. That is not the case in Hamburg, with this year’s Australian Open runner-up Alexander Zverev among the players set to compete. However, there have also been some high-profile withdrawals, including from one of the most significant names in tennis.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s decision to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. After his three-month ban, he had planned to play in Germany to get match practice. The 23-year-old surprised with an impressive run at the Italian Open, meaning he does not need additional competitive action before the French Open begins on May 25th.
Holger Rune was the second player to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. After feeling bad at the Italian Open, he had tests that showed an infection in his throat and stomach. The 2025 Barcelona Open champion understandably decided to use the week before the French Open to recover as best he can instead of potentially making himself feel worse by playing matches.
Tommy Paul also removed himself from the Hamburg Open entry list. The American withdrew for the same reason as Sinner. After an excellent run to the Italian Open semifinal, which ended in a three-set loss to Sinner, Paul is taking some time to rest before trying to better getting to the third round of last year’s French Open.
Ugo Humbert was the other man who withdrew. He retired from his round of 64 match in Rome against Corentin Moutet in the second set with an injury. The 26-year-old does not want to risk missing his home Grand Slam and will not play in Hamburg for that reason.
Sinner’s place at the Hamburg Open was taken by Damir Dzumhur. The Bosnian is a capable clay-court player, which he showed by beating Sebastian Baez, a specialist on the dirt, at the Madrid Open. He lost to Matteo Arnaldi in the following round. Daniel Altmaeir replaced Rune at the ATP 500 tournament. The German often dazzles crowds with his one-handed backhand, and he should get great backing at his home event.
Bu Yunchaokete entered the Hamburg Open entry list after Paul’s withdrawal. He has competed at a Challenger Tour event in Turin this week and built momentum in his game by reaching the semifinal. Tomas Martin Etcheverry benefited from Humbert’s decision not to compete. The Argentine is a superb clay-court player at his best, evidenced by his being a former French Open semifinalist.
