Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner define the rivalry that is expected to continue after the years of the “Big 3” (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic). Now, the big question mark is whether we are experiencing deja vu in this rivalry. Previously, Federer was the player who used to dominate everyone on the ATP Tour. But when he came up against Nadal, he started to miss and show his human side. Nadal won six of the seven encounters with Federer between 2004 and 2006.
Now, is the same situation happening with Alcaraz and Sinner? In the recent episode, the Spaniard beat his great rival and World No. 1 7-6 6-1 to secure his first Italian Open title. It was the seventh Masters 1000 title of his career and the second of the season.
According to the reports from Tennis.com, Alcaraz said about the Italian Open final with Sinner, “I knew at the beginning, the matches against Jannik are always really tactical matches. I think today I started the match really well. Tactically since the beginning till the last ball, I didn’t lose the focus, which is great for me…I didn’t do a roller coaster. Beating Jannik, winning in Rome, both things mixed together give you a great confidence coming into Paris.”
During the trophy ceremony, Alcaraz added further. “I can’t imagine how tough and difficult it was for you and your family. I’m not gonna get tired of saying what an amazing person and athlete you are, with your team. Working so hard every day to make this possible, to make your people proud.”
Jannik Sinner has been the undisputed World No. 1 since the start of the 2024 season. The Italian has stopped everyone who has come in his way, including Novak Djokovic. The Serb has played the Italian on two occasions on the ATP Tour since 2024, and on both occasions, Sinner has come out victorious. However, there is something different when it comes to playing Carlos Alcaraz.
Since the start of the 2024 season, Alcaraz is the only player Sinner has been unable to beat. The duo has met on four occasions since then, and the Spaniard has won all of these encounters. All of their matches in the 2024 season went the distance, with the China Open final ending on a final-set tiebreaker. They also met in the Roland Garros semifinal last year, where Alcaraz won in five sets despite trailing two sets to one earlier on.
