'He gave up too easily': Jimmy Connors blasts Carlos Alcaraz's attitude in Wimbledon final
Jonathan Newton, Special to USA TODAY

Jimmy Connors criticized Carlos Alcaraz for his performance in the Wimbledon final. Despite winning the first set against rival Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz watched as the Italian World No. 1 turned the match around, taking the next three sets consecutively and dominating play.

The Italian claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, dethroning Alcaraz at Wimbledon where he had a 20-match winning streak and was the defending champion of the previous two editions.

Although the Spaniard entered as the favorite, American former World No. 1 Jimmy Connors lamented the level Alcaraz displayed in the match. "His attitude is not acceptable in my opinion, he shouldn't have had that behavior. He complained to his team and showed a weakness that he shouldn't have flaunted at the time."

"He would have had to think to look for some new solution and do something different, only in that way he could come back,” Connors added. “If your plan A doesn't work, you have to think about something else. I too happened to be in great difficulty in a Grand Slam final and I didn't know what to do anymore, it happened to everyone. He gave up too easily."

Alcaraz lost the opportunity to win his third consecutive Wimbledon title, and his streak of five straight wins against his classic rival Sinner was also broken. Heading into the hardcourt swing, things take on a new tone, with a revitalized Sinner looking more like a favorite than ever, and Alcaraz needing to find solutions to overcome Sinner once again.
