British tennis legend Andy Murray retired from professional tennis after he bowed out from the 2024 Paris Olympics. There were emotional scenes all over the arena as the three-time Grand Slam champion hung up his racket. Murray retired leaving so many stories on the tour and Coco Gauff ‘s current coach and his ex-coach Brad Gilbert recalled one.
He remembered how the Briton left him in awe of his resilience and determination. Gilbert talked about when Murray used to train with Michael Johnson and performed better than asked, leaving everyone stunned.
My favorite Andy Murray story was in 2006 after the US Open. I took him to train with Michael Johnson. And Michael took him to the track and he goes ‘ok we are gonna run eight 200s today and in between each 200 you are gonna walk the distance.’ And then he goes ‘Let me see if you can get eight under 32 seconds. Brad Gilbert said while taking to Vansh from Tennis One.
Gilbert claimed that Murray readily accepted this challenge. Although neither Johnson nor Gilbert expected him to pull it off, he did. The Briton ran all eight 200s within 30 seconds.
Brad Gilbert and Michael Johnson were skeptical about Andy Murray pulling off the challenge as he did not have a shoe with spikes and ran in his tennis shoes. Gilbert and Johnson felt that he had no chance of running eight 200s within 30 seconds.
But as has been the case with the Briton, he proved everyone wrong. The British tennis star stunned both his coach and Johnson.
And then he told Michael, he says, ‘I am gonna get eight under 30 seconds.’ And I was like ‘ok’ then I asked Michael, ‘What are the chances of him being able to do that?’ He’s got no spikes he’s got tennis shoes on, no chance. Literally he does eight, all under 30 seconds. It was an unbelievable effort. Brad Gilbert recounted

This was not the only time Murray rose to the challenge and performed better than expected. Throughout his career, Murray fought with three of the best players in the history of the sport and also defeated them. While the Briton beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic 11 times each, the two-time Wimbledon champion toppled Rafael Nadal seven times.
