'I don't know that': Carlos Alcaraz shares reason behind not contacting Jannik Sinner during three-month ban
Sipa Press

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has opened up the reason behind not reaching out to Italy’s Jannik Sinner during his three-month ban. Both players faced off in the final of the Rome Open where the young Spaniard came out on top in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1.

Despite the result, Sinner would have been happy with his performance as it was his first tournament since the Australian Open back in January. The reigning world number one tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in two doping tests in March last year. He managed to escape the ban in the early proceedings as The International Tennis Integrity Agency ( ITIA) declared him innocent following a detailed hearing where his counsel claimed that the substance was available in the player’s sample because he came in close contact with his physio Naldi who used to spray for the treatment of a cut on his finger.

The World Anti-Doping Agency ( WADA) appealed against the ITIA’s verdict in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and demanded a two-year ban for the three-time Grand Slam winner. However, the issue finally came to a conclusion as WADA announced that they had reached an agreement with Sinner, which will result in the player remaining out of action for three months. His ban ended just a few days before the start of the Rome Masters.

Sinner, in an interview during his ban, stated that not many fellow players reached out to him. Alcaraz spoke to the media after the match, where he was asked about the reason behind not getting in touch with the three-time Grand Slam winner. The current world number two stated that one of the reasons why he did not contact Sinner was because he was ‘playing’.

“I don't know if he was thinking about me, he wasn't thinking about me,” he said. “I don't know that. Well, I mean, for three months I can't feel him because I wasn't in that position. I mean, I can understand that he was surprised about some players who called him. I didn't call him. I didn't talk to him in those three months. But it wasn't about if I was agreed or not. I mean, I was playing. I was in my feelings, as well. Honestly, I can understand him that he was surprised about some other players who didn't call him. It is in his rights to say it. I have to say that I don't know if he said that because of me or not. What I can say is when he got injured sometimes just giving him my good energy just to have him back as soon as possible. It is about we're playing, fighting each other. In that three months, I can understand him, what he said. Honestly, I don't know if he was thinking about some players or others.”

Vikings WR gets brutal injury news for second straight season

A Minnesota Vikings wide receiver's season is already over. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Rondale Moore is being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a leg injury that he suffered in the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans this past weekend. It is a devastating blow for Moore, who is now being sidelined for an entire season, before it even begins, for the second year in a row. Moore signed a one-year, $2 million contract in free agency with the Vikings this offseason in the hopes he could return from a different injury that cost him the entirety of the 2024 season. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for backup quarterback Desmond Ridder. This is now two different teams that Moore has been a part of, but will never play a game for them due to injuries. Moore was injured while returning a punt. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals, catching 135 passes for 1,201 yards over three seasons before being traded. He was never going to be counted on to be a key contributor for the Vikings offense this season, especially given the superstars they already have at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he still had a chance to be an interesting depth player. Now it is fair to wonder what the rest of his career might even look like. Missing two full seasons due to two different leg injuries is going to be a brutal thing to try to come back from. Missing two seasons for any reason is difficult, but when you add the leg injuries to the equation, it makes the obstacle even steeper.

Shohei Ohtani named in lawsuit regarding $240M real estate project

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has been named in a lawsuit that was filed in Hawaii on Friday. Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, are being sued by a real estate investor and a broker in Hawaii who have accused Ohtani and Balelo of sabotaging a $240M real estate deal for a development on the Big Island. According to court documents that were obtained by Jimmy Golen of The Associated Press, real estate developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto say Ohtani and Balelo deliberately had them removed from the project “for no reason other than their own financial self-interest.” The lawsuit claims Ohtani was brought into the deal for his promotional value and that he and his agent pushed the founders of the project out using “threats and baseless legal claims.” “Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity,” the lawsuit states. “Plaintiffs bring this suit to expose Defendants’ misconduct and to ensure that the rules of contract, fair dealing, and accountability apply equally to all — celebrity or not.” Hayes and Matsumoto have also accused Ohtani and Balelo of trying to push them out of a similar neighboring development project. The $240M Big Island development is located along Hapuna Beach, which is rated one of the top beaches in the world. Matsumoto was supposed to be the listing agent for the properties, which average more than $17.3M each. A brochure for the project stated that Ohtani, who was called “Japan’s Babe Ruth” has committed to buying one of the 14 properties and acting as a “celebrity spokesperson” for the development. Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700M contract with the Dodgers prior to the 2024 season. The two-way star is having another monster year with a .284 average, 42 home runs, 78 RBI and a 1.013 OPS entering Tuesday. Ohtani has also returned to pitching this season and has a 2.37 ERA across 19 innings. Ohtani was also connected to a massive gambling scandal last year, though Major League Baseball determined that the 31-year-old was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Najee Harris may have role reduced after fireworks accident

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris still has yet to return to action after a July 4 fireworks accident, and it sounds like he does not necessarily have a job guaranteed to him when he does. Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman admitted Tuesday that the team is planning a steady rotation at running back whether or not Harris is available to play in Week 1. First-round draft pick Omarion Hampton, however, is the player who has part of the rotation locked down, not Harris. The Chargers likely intended to use Harris as a part-time back no matter what. However, he certainly cannot have helped himself with his eye injury. The issue was described as superficial after it happened and Harris was expected to be ready for the season, but he is still on the non-football injury list and has yet to participate in a full practice. Harris, 27, is entering his first season with the Chargers after signing with them in March. He can earn up to $9.25 million on his one-year deal, but that will require him to remain part of the rotation with Hampton.

Odell Beckham Jr. linked to playoff contender after retirement spoof

The Pittsburgh Steelers are linked to a wide receiver who has had a wild Tuesday of speculation on the internet. Odell Beckham Jr. took to X to post that he was not officially retiring, as had been suggested by a fake Adam Schefter account. "Not done yet… thanks for hr concerns and have a blessed day," Beckham posted before going on a rant. "No seriously. Plz stop reading everything on the internet, and stop texting me happy retirement b4 u p-ss me off. That will get no response. I promise u the day I’m done I will let u kno. Again if u text me happy retirement im just gon have to block u. Thanks." Not long after Beckham said he wasn't retiring, Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan posted that the Steelers "could be" in talks with Beckham to join Pittsburgh for the upcoming season. "Rumor: The Steelers could be working out Odell Beckham Jr now that he's been cut by Miami," Fillipponi posted. "Just a rumor. But it's out there. I honestly don't see that working." The Steelers need depth at wide receiver behind DK Metcalf for Aaron Rodgers to target in the upcoming season. Pittsburgh receivers have struggled in training camp, and no one is stepping up to earn the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the preseason. Beckham is a three-time Pro Bowl receiver who played a key role in helping the Los Angeles Rams win Super Bowl LVI. The 32-year-old receiver appeared in nine games for the Miami Dolphins, recording just nine catches for 55 yards. Beckham had a solid season as a depth contributor for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 when he recorded 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns. If he were to join the Steelers, Beckham wouldn't be the player he was when he last earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2016. Injuries have taken a toll on his body. However, he's a better option than Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson.
