Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has given his verdict about Serbia’s Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The 38-year-old secured his spot in the semifinal of the third Grand Slam of the year after beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinal with a score of 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 on Wednesday.
That win will set up Djokovic’s clash in the semifinal against world number one Jannik Sinner, who secured his spot in the last-four after beating America’s Ben Shelton in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. This will be the second time in three years that Djokovic and Sinner will face off in the semifinal at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club.
In 2023, Djokovic got the better of the Italian tennis star in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. That, however, is not enough to convince Kyrgios about Djokovic’s chances going into Friday’s semifinal. Kyrgios has recently spoken to TNT Sports, where he expressed doubts about Djokovic’s ability to beat Sinner or defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Kyrgios was also of the opinion that Djokovic is playing ‘on his last legs’.
"Djokovic, I do believe, and I hate to say, is on his last legs,” said Kyrgios. “He's still an amazing player and he can still compete, but I'm just not sure for how long. I think Alcaraz and Sinner will be carrying this sport for the next 10-15 years.”
This will be the 10th meeting between Sinner and Djokovic. In the previous nine meetings, Sinner had an advantage with five wins compared to four wins of Djokovic. The competition has remained largely one-sided in the recent past as Sinner has won all four matches against Djokovic since 2023. Their most recent meeting was in the semifinal of the French Open, where Sinnner came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 7-6.
