Two former British players, Tim Henman and Laura Robson, have hailed a recent decision taken by fellow countrywoman Katie Boulter. The 28-year-old is going through a difficult campaign, but most recently, she has won 11 out of 18 matches and suffered defeats in seven of them.
Despite those struggles, Boulter has managed to find some good form as she lifted the WTA 125 event in Paris — Trophée Clarins — after beating France’s Chloe Paquet in the final with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. In a video that was shared on the tournament’s official handle on the social media platform Instagram, Boulter stated that she was ‘super happy’ with the triumph. “Hey everyone, got the trophy here, super happy,” she said. “Managed to get my first clay title. And yeah, looking forward to Roland Garros. So I am super happy.”
Two former British players Henman and Robson spoke to Sky Sports where both praised the decision taken by Boulter to feature in a WTA 125 event, just few weeks before the start of the second Grand Slam of the year. Robson was of the opinion that playing in the same city where French Open will take place will give Boulter a lot of hope.
‘I was messaging her this afternoon after this match,” she said while speaking to Sky Sports. “She has had a tough couple of weeks on this surface, figuring out how to play, and decided to go to Paris to just get matches ahead of Roland Garros and make the most of an extra week of match play, and what a great decision. I am so pumped for her.”
On the other hand, Henman stated that he ‘loved’ the decision taken by Boulter and also praised the player for identifying her weakness while playing on clay. “I love that decision,” he said. “She is a top 50 player, has knocked on the door of the top 20, but she has recognised that she struggles on clay. She has dropped down and gone there to get the matches and I think that can just be the difference to get that extra belief that she can compete on clay.”
